BACKGROUND
Secure Retirement is founded on a unique approach to research and knowledge. Our founder, Richard Morey, has been interested in people with unusual talents since childhood. In graduate school at the University of Iowa, Mr. Morey was the co-founder of a research center dedicated to recognizing and nurturing gifted individuals. (Twenty-two years later, this is one of the largest and most comprehensive research institutions in the country in gifted education).
Many years ago, Richard brought this background to the study of investing. Early in his career, he undertook a massive research project to find those investors who were truly gifted at their craft. Studying every fund available to the public, Richard searched for those that did not go down during bear markets and soundly defeated the competition during bull markets. In order to qualify for consideration, a fund had to go down no more than one-quarter as much as the market during bear markets and defeat the stock market by over 25% during bull markets.
Out of tens of thousands of funds and stocks, only a handful had both avoided losses during the bad times and outperformed during good times. A few of the “winners” have more than doubled the returns from the stock market over a substantial time period. In terms of risk, most actually had positive returns from 2000-2002, when the stock market lost over 40% of its value. Studying these rare investments, Mr. Morey discovered they were all managed by gifted individuals, and that they followed essentially the same investment discipline. While this discipline is the superior approach for all investors, it is particularly ideal for retirement portfolios.
